Robert and Gordon,
I too have MURPHY in my tree but have been barely testing the waters with my
search for my "Murphy" in County Carlow.
On the off chance that there may be someone else searching for the same
family that I am searching, I too will post what little that I do know.
My great-grandmother was Margaret LAVENDER, born Margaret KING. She was
born 11 March 1872 in Bagenalstown, Carlow, Ireland. Her mother was Johanna
MURPHY born about 1844 also in Bagenalstown, Carlow, Ireland.
Johanna MURPHY married Patrick KING who was born about 1843 in Domore,
Ireland. They married 21 FEB 1865, in Bagenalstown.

....Robert, I am sure you realize that looking for a Murphy in Ireland
will be, shall we say, an unending pursuit!
What I write to you now, without the specifics before me, might give you
some encouragement, only to have your hopes dashed once I get a look at
those I do have. But here goes:
The Borris parish records include those of Rathanna Chapel, a few
miles from Borris. Martin Flood, Bn. 1816, (headstone date) married
Bridget Murphy in that Chapel in (forgive me) 183X. Rathanna's records
of the years which might have held Martin's and Bridget's baptisms have
been missing for 100 years, so their parents are unknown...at least to
me (how about you?)!
Bridget (or Biddy, as Martin called her) bore their first child
Johanna in 1838, and their first son, Philip Patrick Flood, in 1840.
Martin took his family to Pennsylvania in 184X, thence to Illinois, Kane
Co., in 1851(2). Children born in PA were the second son Martin (named
for father), another son Mathew, and a third, James (record in Catholic
church, Greensburg, PA. Only Philip, Johanna and Mathew survived Martin
and Bridget: Martin is buried in the cemetery in Maple Park, Ill.; an
undated headstone named Bridget may or may not be his wife's. (She was
still alive at Martin's death.)
Philip had many children, the early ones born in Illinois after
his Civil War service ended, two were born in Iowa, and some in
Nebraska. He died in the Vets. Home in Grand Island, NE. Philip's wife
O'Brien, from Illinois, died earlier in a
buggy crash. Their children were separated, some living with the oldest
child Johanna, the others various places.
My grandfather Martin, born in Illinois, farmed in Kearney Co., then
near Sumner, NE. His sole son, Milford, was my father, who died in
Kearney in 197(9?).
The Catholic practice at the time of Philips birth was NOT to give
a second name, so the additional "Patrick" may be a clue as to Martin's
father. There is no record of a plausible Philip in the family at
that time, or in other Ireland Counties. There are very few Floods in
the Borris area, only one in the Rathanna cemetery today. There are
several Murphys in that cemetery. Have you searched there?
As you can tell, I've spent my time with the easier male line, and
I've learned a lot, but not nearly enough. I have said recently that
I'm about to venture into the Murphys, knowing full well that that most
common of Irish names would be much more difficult than Flood.
Now here you give me some hope, as perhaps I have you: those
townlands that Mary and her other sister were from--did those give you
any information of their parents? Again, the naming process for
children might provide a clue: Bridget's first daughter might have been
named for Bridget's (therefore, Mary's) mother (Johanna?)
Descendants of Bridget's parents, (Murphy) through the Flood line,
are traceable, and though only two of the several children of Philip
provided Flood last names to today, I can give them to you.
(Let me go back for a name I'd forgotten. Bridget/Martin's son
Mathew got the farm in Kane Co. when Martin died. Mathew was Martin's
will executor, and after a few years of that, left the job in the hands
of the co-executor, who wrote in the margin of the legal
proceeding:.."gone to Missouri."
I lost him there (the absence of a 1890 census didn't help), but a
recent discovery that he and his wife Elizabeth had bought a piece of
land in the county to the west of Kane Co. opens up the possibilities
that a) they did not go to Missouri as stated, and /or b) they had
children in Illinois I've yet to discover. or not......But in any
case, there goes another descendant of the Murphy family you seek.)
If you are looking at land records (or other) in those townships,
keep an eye open for Flood, will you? I'd be pinkled tick to find
Martin's daddy there!
Let me know if you want other info. from me....that is, if you
think any of this pertains to the Mary you seek.
Good luck,
Gordon Flood

Looking for any information about Mary Murphy and family. She was born
about
1808-1811 presumably in County Carlow. Canadian Census records have varying
ages. She was living in Scortreen (may also be known as Knocknagundarragh),
County Carlow at the time of her marriage to John Walsh in Borris in Feb
1833.
John Lannen and Nancy Nowlan were attendants. She may have had sisters
Brigit and Ellen as they are shown as baptismal sponsors for two of their
children
baptized in Borris. She and John emigrated to Canada about 1837/8 and may
have moved to the US for a few years and then back to Haldimand County,
Ontario,
Canada about 1843. Mary was living with son Patrick in Walpole, Ontario in
1881. She died Feb 19, 1893 in Hagersville, Ontario.
Thanks,
Robert Walsh
