I am still looking for my great-grandfather John KELLY and his wife, Johanna
CLEAR. John's parents were Brigid MURPHY and (possibly) Patrick KELLY.
Johanna's parents were Thomas CLEAR and Mary NOWLAN/NOLAN of Kilconnor, Co.
Carlow. John and Johanna were married in St. Andrew's R.C. Church,
Bagenalstown, Co.Carlow, in the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin by Rev.
James Kavanagh, Vicar on July 01, 1858. Witnesses were Michael Hogan and
Maria Robinson. Eight of John and Johanna's nine children were born in
Co.Carlow.
John emigrated to Canada between 1869 and 1871 with his oldest child;
Johanna followed shortly after, leaving the children in either the Carlow
Poorhouse, or in the care of their three aunts who were living in a cottage
at the foot of Ballon Hill . In the birth registrations for two of his
children, John is listed as a farmer with his home as Killane. He and his
family apparently lived with John's uncle Peter Kelly (d. 1859), who was
the last life in a lease of three lives. There were three aunts who also
lived there, one was Brigid Kelly. There was also an uncle James KELLY and
an aunt Ann KELLY who both d. in or about 1864.
If anyone has any information about John KELLY, his wife, Johanna CLEAR, his
uncles Peter and James KELLY or his aunts Brigid and Ann KELLY, I would be
most appreciative.
Thanks
Inez Allen
