I seem to have missed this thread, where a poster made a comment about the
commercialization of genealogy.
Do people expect genealogy to be free? Do we all have the time and money to
drive to research facilities?
Genealogy is not cheap. Whether you hire a genealogist or do the research
yourself, it all adds up. If you write a book on your family history and then
sell it, you will not recoup your expenses. Costs of photocopies vary from
facility to facility. Gas prices keep going up. Time is also money. Not
everyone can volunteer to input data and scan records. Some people who do this
are paid, such as the employees of Ancestry.com.
I will say that the costs of some aspects of doing genealogy seem very
expensive, but if you want access to records, what are you going to do?
I see online databases for a fee, from more than one country. Sometimes the
records I find are scans of microfilmed records, others are submitted material
from researchers. Some material are indexes. I find lots of value, but I use
the information as clues and try to obtain photocopies of the actual records.
Genealogy was being commercialized long before the internet, but the internet
has caused the popularity of this hobby to increase dramatically. Scams have
increased too, so be careful. I do recommend checking out companies or asking
for recommendations from other researchers.
There are many research materials available for purchase such as books and
cds. Some books are sold by genealogy societies and have been for years. It's
a form of fundraising to help keep their libraries open for us researchers to
use. Now we also see cds of records. Some are worth buying, some aren't.
I think we will see alot more genealogy records online in the years to come,
some of it fee or subscription based, some of it free. We can NOT expect all
of it to be free. Genealogy is big business for some. We can all chose whether
or not to do business with these companies.
I could go on, but I really need to get back to doing genealogy.
