Hi Terry,
I wold like to address your middle paragraph. My Kelley ancestors
apparently used to spell their name Kelly (without the extra "e") and
there is a story of my Protestant ancestor marrying a Catholic and
that's when the extra "e" was put in. Not sure if it is true, but it sure
sounds good!
Good luck with your searches. Hope this helps somehow.

Subject: What is the right phrase and spelling?
The only clue I have from my DelaneyLine as to where they lived prior to
coming to England is the census which states that Michael Delaney was from
Carlow. If someone asked me where I was from I would say Montreal (the city)
and I would not reply Quebec (the province- the equivalent to a county).
In the 18430's and 40's when people left Ireland and settled in England what
was the custom? Did they refer to Carlow the town or Carlow the county? Also
my great grandfather who was Catholic married my grandmother who was
protestant and although he was born Michael Delaney he married as Michael
Delany. Is this an indicator that he changed his religion? Were the
Delaney's with an ey Catholic and the Delany's with just the y protestant
and did this apply in Ireland as well?
One last question, Both my great grandfather's family and my great
grandmothers family for many generations were lath cleavers. I have checked
with Warrington and they do not have any apprenticeship records. What about
Carlow? Did one have to apprentice to become a lath cleaver (ie they cut
the thin strips of wood that were used when plastering was done) in Ireland
or was it an unskilled job that did not require apprenticeship. Was there an
apprenticeship system in Carlow? Thanks so much.Terry Delany
