Michael,
I've found that technique to be extremely helpful. It is, in fact, very
respectful in the sense that priests and others who hold genealogical information
frequently receive many queries. This is a small thank you for their time
and effort, certainly often more symbolic than of any major material substance
but it is the thought that counts.
I've always sent a check (adjusting the amount to cover the expected charge
at the receivers bank) and it's always worked well. Also I usually send a
thank-you note. I've been researching my Irish families for more than 20 years
and I've never failed to receive an answer back to my queries-occasionally
receiving the check back (I usually send IRC's +self addressed envelope). I've
made some friends through my queries and have visited a number of them during
my trips to Ireland. It's a great way to meet people you wouldn't otherwise
have contact with.
