Thank you Roger and PP. I will certainly look into Staplestown.

I did not do the research that names Maplestown as the place of an 1849
birth and it is unsourced. However there is, or was at the appropriate
time, a Maplestown in Carlow quoted from Lewis's 1837 topographical
dictionary (I don't have a copy) at the Irish Times site
(http://www.ireland.com/ancestor/placenames/index.cfm?fuseaction=Simple&UserID=)

Placename County Civil Parish Poor Law Union Lewis
Maplestown Carlow Rahill Baltinglass Lewis

So, while there may have been a mistranscription of Staplestown, I would
really like to discover where Maplestown is or was, to cover all bases. PP
points to Maplestown Stud, address Lower Maplestown, Carlow. It may now be
a rural address or the name of some farms. I may write to the stud just to
try to find where Maplestown actually is.

Bill.

| Hi!
| Just a thought!
| Could the original transcription which gave the location as "Maplestown"
be
| wrong?
| Given that there seems to be a family association with the townland of
| Tinriland, parish of Tullowmagimma,
| Could "Staplestown" be the location for which you are looking?
|
| Staplestown shows up on a mid-1800s map that I have, just a little bit
| north-by-north west of Tinriland along the road heading towards Carlow
town.
| There is also a church shown for Staplestown.
|
| With best regards, Roger

|
| Where, please, is Maplestown? No maps that I hqave been able to access
show
| it.
|
| The only online references to it that I can find refer to a horse stud or
to
| a gravel and sand enterprise.
|
| Anne (Annie) WATERS was born at Maplestown in 1849 to parents Bartholomew
| Waters and Mary Malone.
|
| BARTHOLOMEW WATERS shows up in Griffith's Valuations 1852.
| Griffith's has him in County Carlow, PLU of Carlow, Parish of
| TULLOWMAGIMMA, Townland of TINRILAND, Ord S. 7, maps 19A and 19B, tenants
of
| Viscount Beresford, land of just over
| 104 acres.
|
| Can this land be equated with Maplestown?
|
| Any assistance gratefully received.
|
|
| Bill.
