I post the following reply to my thread, below, with permission, for reasons
outlined therein. Bill.

Bill,

I can't answer this on-list, as I have been blocked from all of the Rootsweb
and Yahoo lists for over four months now - as a result of AOL's addition of
an
HTML tagline to all outgoing mail. Supposedly, "someone" is working on it.
But I still receive the list mail, and can contact the original inquirer
directly - so it's not a disaster.

I happened to stumble across your mention of the Diocese of Ossory in the
colloquy 'twixt you and Cara. As the recent "owner" of Rev. William
Carrigan's
2000-page 1910 magnum opus "The History and Antiquities of the Diocese of
Ossory", I can certainly comment about the RC side of the question.
Carrigan gives
the history back to St. Kieran who, in the 6th century, is considered the
first Bishop of the Diocese of Ossory. I think that a more understandable
date
might be the 1118 Synod of Rathbreasail [sic], which "parcelled out" areas
of
Ireland to the various Dioceses. Ossory was one of them, and its boundaries
were not significantly different then from what they are at the present
time.

I don't have much information about the church of Ireland Diocesan
structure,
but I have some maps. The current Diocese in southeastern Ireland is
identified as Cashel and Ossory, but the subtitle says "Cashel, Waterford,
Lismore,
Ossory, Ferns and Leighlin", and certainly includes all of those areas. I
have
a map from 1906 which shows a combined Diocese of Ossory, Ferns and Leighlin
in the southeast. I don't have any indication about the Diocese in the
Church
of Ireland prior to 1906. Sorry.

| Thanks Cara for your helpful reply.
|
| However, is it possible, from the description of the source, to learn
| whether these were Catholic or Church of Ireland diocesan records? Was
| 'Diocese of Ossory, Leinster' in the early 1800s an entity of both
churches,
| or can we tell from that description which one?
|
| >From the information available, I don't know if occupation was stated.
To
| check further it would be highly helpful to know which church records to
| search, should they be available, which was my concluding query.

| Bill.

|| Well as a general rule in Parish registers I have noted that Church of
|| Ireland do add what the fathers work was
|| at marriage
||
|| In Roman Catholic I have not noted this in the earlier parish records BUT
|| this what I have encountered others may have encountered other bits n
| pieces
|| but if you are looking for Websters most I have encountered are Church of
|| Ireland but as you do not say what or who you seek I am only taking a
| guess
|| tonight.
||
|| A name sometimes is also a handy way of saying either way for religion
|| .............now take my others halfs name and he is RC as is 99.9 of the
|| family that is of those pesky Toole lads.
||
|| Cheers for now
