I think, until Catholic Emancipation, that Catholics, in general, didn't
have any burial grounds of their own except the traditional burial grounds
which probably were associated with the churches taken over by the state
religion and/or may have pre-dated the Reformation.
I think the Ministers may have had to be paid to officiate at a burial or
for them to allow a Catholic Minister to officiate. I also think that this
situation contributed to the decision by Daniel O'Connell, the Great
Liberator, to establish the Catholic burial ground at Glasnevin.
While I think the above is essentially true I stand to be corrected by those
who are more knowledgeable.
