Waiting Lists
The recent nurse's strike will probably result in growing waiting list for
operations. There was already a large waiting list before the strike. The
strike reported in the last issue has been settled.

No Doctor
The people of Shercock are concerned about the lack of a resident doctor in
the town. A visiting doctor who visits four mornings a week now serves the
town. Local Councillor Francis McDermot has appealed to the North Eastern
Health Board to ensure there is a resident doctor in Shercock.

Tragic Death
Twenty year old Shane Whelan from Cootehill who was studying in college in
Cork City, was killed when he fell 80 feet. He was returning to his digs
(accommodation) late at night and finding himself locked out, tried to gain
access to the premises from the rear. He was new to the area and was not
familiar with the local geography.

Revitalising Cavan
A large crowd turned up at a conference organised by Cavan County
Enterprise Board to hear how the new Rural and Town renewal scheme will
work. The scheme will allow new homeowners to write the cost of buying (or
building) a house off against tax and will allow people to own their home
with out being forced to take on a crippling mortgage.

New Psychiatrist
Mary Cosgrove has been appointed as the new Consultant Psychiatrist for
Cavan Monaghan. She will be responsible for developing psychiatric services
for the elderly.

New Mast
An Bord Pleanala (the planning appeals board) has overturned a Cavan County
Council decision to refuse planning permission for an ESAT mobile phone
mast at "Clement's Folly" (an old monument) on a hill overlooking Ballinagh.

Pig Prices
Joe Walsh Minister for Agriculture has expressed concern about the recent
slide in pig prices. Prices had been bad since last year but rallied a bit
in the summer before dropping again. This is a major concern for many Cavan
people with 20% of the national pig herd in the county.

Dead Cow
In a bizarre incident a valuable Charolais cow grazing in a roadside field
near Redhills was shot dead by person(s) unknown. The animal was shot
through the eye with a rifle.

Pioneers Centenary
Seven hundred members of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association (they
abstain from alcohol) gathered in Ballyconnell to celebrate the centenary
of the association.

The Cavan Connection
Issue 200
8 - Nov - 1999

Daring Raid
A gang of masked raiders got away with thousands of pounds worth of
cigarettes and 1500 pounds in cash during an early morning raid on the
Hotel Kilmore. Armed with iron bars and hammers they smashed their way into
the hotel from the rear, locked up the night porter, got the goods and
successfully made their escape. However in their hurry to get away they
missed 20,000 in cash which was on the premises.

Refuse Charges
Cavan County Manager Brian Johnston has said the cost of refuse disposal in
the county will "soar" in the coming years. It currently cost 50 pounds to
dispose of a ton of refuse in the counties dumps, by next year the cost
will have doubled.

Future Broadcasting
A number of the top brass and well known presenters from RTE (Irish TV)
will host a seminar in the Kilmore Hotel to discuss the future of Irish
broadcasting. RTE who once had a monopoly on Irish broadcasting are now
facing increased competition and are seeking to find out from the public
what they want in the future.

Goat Menace
A small group of goats are wreaking havoc in gardens on the Dublin Road out
of Cavan. Declan Sheridan owner of the Meadow View Inn, told the Anglo Celt
that a large buck goat and kids are eating all the shrubs and flowers in
sight. He described them as "fierce fly".

Dinner Dance
Three hundred people attended the 16th annual Dinner Dance of the Bedford
and Hertfordshire Cavan Association in Luton (UK).

Water Scheme
The people of Ballyjamesduff and surrounding areas have raised 12,700
pounds for the development of a new water scheme in the village of Lale in
Kenya. The scheme is the brainchild of Brother Gerard Smith from
Ballyjamesduff who has been working in Lale for the last seven years.

Parking Problems
The town of Belturbet is experiencing major traffic problem following the
opening of Aghalane Bridge earlier this year. Belturbet was on the main
Dublin Donegal road until Aghalane Bridge was blown up in the early 1970s,
now that the bridge has reopened the narrow streets of the town are unable
to cope with the sudden rise in traffic.
