Subject: Francis & George ROGERS, 1600's

Searching for further information on two brothers: Francis & George ROGERS
said to be merchants of Cork in the 1600's and also referred to as "Irish
traders". A third brother, William ROGERS, was a "merchant of Bristol" and
was known to be a Quaker, quite probably a member of the Quaker Society of
Free Traders.
My ancestor, Robert EYRE, apprenticed under William ROGERS, merchant of
Bristol. Robert EYRE was b:30 Jan 1648, the day King Charles I was
executed, in Wiltshire so was probably apprenticed to William ROGERS circa
1660. He likely would have completed his apprenticeship circa 1666-68.
BRO apprenticeship & Freeman records for the pertinent years are missing.
I find a reference to a deed dated 22 & 23 March 1681 where Francis ROGERS
and his brother George each purchased 2500 acres from William PENN. At
least some of the 5000 acres Francis and George ROGERS purchased was in the
area of Kennett twp, Chester cnty, Pennsylvania. Robert EYRE's
father-in-law, Francis SMITH, gentleman, of Devizes, Wilts., purchased 500
acres of land from PENN 07-08 Sep 1681 and settled in Kennett, Chester
cnty, Pennsylvania circa 1686. Robert EYRE made several sea voyages as a
supercargo before he settled in Bethel twp, Chester (now Delaware) cnty,
Pennsylvania circa 1683.
Francis and George ROGERS sold off the land they purchased in Pennsylvania
so it is doubted that they left Ireland but rather purchased the land as an
"investment".
