This was used in correspondence well into the 20th century. A reference
in a letter of response to a letter of the 12th inst (abbreviation for
"instant"), indicates they are replying in the same month as the date in
letter received. If replying to a letter dated in the previous month,
the initial letter is referred to as (e.g.) your letter of the 12th ult
(abbreviation for "ultimo").
Example. You receive a letter dated 12th November. If replying in
November, you'd say "in response to your letter of 12th inst", but if
replying in December, you'd refer to "your letter of the 12th ult".

Two questions for the learned members of this list.
What is the meaning of Esquire in 19th century Ireland and what does the
inst. mean after the date
On the 24th inst.
Thanks, Evelyn
PS. Thank you for the meaning of Bally.
