I am interested in finding more out about the surname Hurley.
My great great grandfather and mother were called John Hurley
and Margaret Cashman. They were both born in Cove/Queenstown/
Cobh in 1839 and 1845. John was a coastguard in various places
around the UK mainland, so I assume he was in Cobh. I know of
a story were Republicans burnt his house down as he worked for
the British government.
He had a daughter called Margaret Anne, also born in Ireland in
1875. He had three sons also, John W., and Thomas Michael, born
in Holyhead, Anglesey, Wales, in 1878 & 1879, and Joseph Morris,
born in Caernarvon in 1880. By 1881 they had moved again down
to Portscatho in Cornwall. Thomas Michael went to London later
on - however I do not know what happened to the other members of
the family - apart from maybe Joseph, who had similar person on
HMS Defiance in Devonport, in 1901.
If anybody had any information on this family, I would be
delighted. Equally, if anyone can provide me with places in the
vicinity of Cobh [as it is now] that are useful to family history
without the need of great wads of cash, that can help or provide
information, that would be great.
Regards
Bob Hurley
