Patsy-
Thank you very much for your reply. I have learned of this BUCKLEY family
and in fact it matches very, very closely with mine. I found this Michael
and all his children in IGI. There was a John born in Feb. 1833 vs, abt1831.
The wife's name was Margaret. She was born a Dennahy. That matches my John &
Mary Buckley's second oldest daughter. There was an older brother Timothy
which would make a nice fit into the family tale. This is also an Irish
speaking area which would agree with some of the difficulties I have seen
that the family had with census takers. My family says that the name
Scannell should be Scanlon. All documents in Wales (birth, baptism,
marriage) and the US have listed Scannell. I assume the family passed down
a shortened version of O Scannlain, (the Irish version) but since it was
unable to be written it was anglicized to Scannell every time.
I have included this family in my tree. BUT, there is reason to doubt this.
We visited Inchigeelagh this spring. It was a wonderful and it was a magical
experience. Since I had investigated enough to determine the townland, I
asked and we were escorted to the former BUCKLEY farm. The foundation of the
house and barn remain. So far you are probably wondering why I haven't
accepted this as fact.
There are two problems:
I could not locate the birth of a Mary Scannell in Inchigeelagh to
match my Mary.
The town historian graciously sent me a BUCKLEY family report for
this family. It appears that the John I thought I had secured married in his
mid 30's in another parish over the ridge.
I have not given up hope entirely and you don't know how grateful I am that
you took the time to find good reason to investigate this family. However, I
must at a minimum continue my search with an open mind.
Thank you for your time and your thoughts.
John

Hello John - not an anwser to your query but in the Griffiths Valuations
there is only one place in Co Cork where a Michael BUCKLEY and an Edward
SCANNELL appear - Inchigeelagh. The Griffiths was taken between 1851 and
1853 so this is a rather tenuous possibility. However Inchigeelagh could be
a starting point.
Cheers, Patsy - New Zealand.
