Hi Joan
We meet again.
I am still plugging along and switched lists in Cork yesterday. As a quick
update I can tell you tat I do not believe Peter and Patrick had the same
father as my John. But I should double check as I always doubt myself on
these things. I was so convinced that Johanna Scannell was Mary's sister
that I ordered her marriage certificate. That was not Edward but I still
haven't excluded that one. If maybe her brother, uncle or other stood in
with Edward being deceased. I agree 100% with you on the baptism and the
godparent names. I combined with another researcher and we sent off to the
Merthyr Library on Monday for exactly this information. I know you gave the
names and baptism dates for Ellen & Bridget which I didn't have because they
never lived to be included in a census and I am very thankful.
We have talked about Mary Scannell being the witness for your Collins
wedding. A couple weeks ago the identical situation occurred again with a
wedding in Tredegar. The wedding couple had moved to Tredegar from MT. The
interesting twist in this case being that that couple plus their descendents
came to Pittsburgh as well. They lived on the same street as my HAYES family
(Yes another Irish connection) in Tredegar (Iron St) and in the same church
parish in Pittsburgh. My G Grandfather Cornelius Buckley married Mary Hannah
Pritchard (daughter of that Hayes family). I now have a strong opinion that
for some unknown reason Mary Scannell's maiden name was used by the priest
at these two weddings.
Interesting isn't it?
John

I have also searched for a Mary Scannell in Merthyr in vain.
It looks like you have much of the info for Merthyr as I do but connecting
to where in Cork is really difficult. In 1852 when John married at St.
Illtyd's there are 2 other Buckleys marrying close to the time. Patrick and
Peter. Peter also had a Bridget and Ellen. This is what I would do. Try to
find out if Patrick and Peter had father Michael. In 1853 a Johanna Scannell
married Daniel McOlive(an error in transcription?) so see if her father is
an Edward. . In Wales I found most of the time the godparents/witnesses were
rellies. Your Bridget, Ellen and Margaret were bapped at St. Mary's. The
parish records for St. Mary's are at the Merthyr library. The librarian is
Carolyn Jacobs and she will sometimes look up the wits for you. I have the
dates if you do not. You said you did an exhaustive search so maybe you
already did this.
My Margaret Murphy married a ? Buckley first then in 1859 married in Merthyr
Timothy Collins with a Mary Scannell as witness. I have looked with interest
at your Mary and thought she may be the witness, especially since there are
not to many Scannells around Merthyr. Joan
