Hi Don,
Great to hear from you. Yeah! I also wish you could help me - the years are ticking past and I never get any further with this so-and-so GFather of mine - Jeremiah Leary!
For many years I struggled with the Twomey connection to our family and have now finally started to get some results - slowly but surely, and also have a bit of a break with my McSweeney ties, but still nothing on the Bantry side of the family. I have a great e-mail contact in Annapolis and now that he has retired from work he is doing annual trips across to Ireland with stop-overs in Salt Lake and he has been very helpful and always seems to find a few bits and pieces for me. It was he who found the birth of Jeremiah Leary to John Leary/Mary Cronin in 1872 in Gortloughra, Bantry. Of course, there is the usual problem, is this really my GFather? How do I prove it?
The family story is that Jeremiah's mother died when he was born and the reason I feel that perhaps Mary Cronin was his mother is that this friend found a death for Mary Cronin Leary, 1876, wife of John Leary, Dairyman Jeremiah's marriage certificate states that his father was John, a Dairyman! This would mean that Jeremiah was 4 years of age at the time of her death! I have copies of John's marriage to Mary Cronin [his father was Michael as was my father] and his 2nd marriage to Johanna Murphy,
I have written and sent money to Mary Burke, sacristan at Bantry, asking for copies of Baptism certificates for the 3 children of the 1st marriage hoping that the sponsors' names may give me a lead.
Heard nothing from Terry, not even a reply to my email, however, his cousin, Mike O'Leary, who lives in New Zealand, came across here just recently for his holidays and he and his wife Margaret and I spent time together and talked mainly Genealogy all the time!!! Lovely couple, but he also said he had lost contact with Terry.
How are you going with your research? Hope you are keeping well.
Peggy
Sure wish I could help ya Peggy. Have sent your msg onto a couple who may be
interested. Anything new with Terry in England?
Don
