Mick,

Ellis Island did not open until 1892 which is too late for many
arrivals, namely the Famine Irish of the 1840's and 1850's, those moving
due to the Industrial Revolution of the 1820's, etc.

Some other things to keep in mind:

- many Irish (from Dublin and elsewhere) went to Liverpool first -- they
could cross the English Channel fairly easily and get cheaper passages
from England
- many Irish went to Canada during the famine years because the fares
were cheaper
- major Canadian ports included Grosse Isle (after 1834), New Brunswick,
Wolfe Island, Prince Edward Island, and Toronto
- about 75 or 80% of the Irish who landed in Canada emigrated to the
USA -- eventually (it took my own family 15 years to work their way
around from Grosse Isle through Toronto then Niagara then the USA, but
they did make it)
