The Irish were used as mercenaries by their various clans all over Europe
but especially in Catholic countries such as France and Spain. He might have
been a member of one of the Irish regiments attached to the Spanish
Monarchy.

Subject: Travelling Soldier
Dear Listers
I'm posting this for a member of another list.
He has a birth/baptism certificate for 1811 in Clones.Co.Monaghan .
The fathers occupation is down as 'Travelling Soldier' and he would like to
know what this means in the hopes of tracing him a bit further back.
Google hasnt been of much use.
My thought would be that he was a 'hired sword' but I could be wrong.
Has anyone any good ideas?
Thank you for your help
Ann Marie
