The Civil Birth marriage and Death record Indexes can still be searched by
the public
at the SRO Lombard St East here in Dublin.
This office used to be the GRO but the GRO (General Registrars Office) has
now been moved
to Covent Road, Roscommon, Co. Roscommon.
The important thing to remember is that the research-room for events
covering all-Ireland
is still open to public callers on Lombard St East in Dublin. and you can
search the indexes for births marriages or deaths that took place anywhere
in Ireland here and get photocopies too...and certificates as well,
depending on the progress of their computerisation which is ongoing but well
advanced in the sense that their staff have access to the advanced
technology, not the public. That will come no doubt but you'll need a cup and
some tea-leaves to determine when.

Basically if you are not using an agent like me to search and supply, and
you are not planning a visit to Dublin either, then you must contact the GRO
in Roscommon as that is now "civil records headquarters" and Dublin has been
demoted if you like to a local office aka a Superintendant Registrars
Office.

The National Library on Kildare St has the Catholic parish records on
microfilm. The start years vary from parish to parish but tend to end circa
1880 with some a little later. They can be fairly basic up to circa 1859 when
a more uniform format with more information was introduced in the city
parishes and a few years later in the rural parishes.

The National Archives on Bishop St has the Church of Ireland parish records
on microfilm as do the RCBL in Braemor Park
with others held in local custody.
NEVER assume that all went up in smoke in 1922.Much has survived as many
were allowed to hold on to their records
as long as they assured the authorities that they had secure
storage..ironic.
Much was lost too but inquire over and over again before assuming anything.
