Hi,
I'm no expert, but from what I've learned, it's necessary to
determine which
religion and parish the ancestors belonged to, and then
whether or not that parish's
registers still exist.
I'll venture a guess for you: If they were from Scotland,
they were likely to be
Presbyterians.

The parish is listed as Dublin, but I remain a bit suspicious of that,
since Dublin was often listed as "last known address", since it was a
departure point, although family records would indicate she and her
parents were last in Scotland before beginning their immigration.
I've been inclined to think Helena's parents were Roman Catholic because
of where she ended up: Spanish Florida/Louisiana. Roman Catholicism was
mandated by the Spanish; you couldn't settle if you were not either R.C.
or agreed to convert on arrival. Her husband's petition for land grant
also listed they wished asylum in Spanish territory on grounds of being
"religious exiles". That may have been a fib to "go along" with the
rules, but many family members born in Louisiana after the Louisiana
purchase in 1803 remained in the Roman Catholic church, while others
were Episcopalian and others Presbyterian. Her husband's family were
Anglican and Roman Catholic by all accounts.
