Dear Rosemary,

Mailman is the name of an anti spam programme that my server offers me the
use of as their client.

I mentioned the name, simply because I imagine that most servers will call
their anti-spam programmes by some similar name.

"Services in Ireland that you are not receiving across the pond" - well,
maybe we are............I do know that some servers outside Ireland offer
their own anti-spam services, for some, such as AOL, it is proferred on a
whether you want it or not basis....... e.g. the way that mails from the
various rootsweb and other lists were all rejected by AOL last week because
somehow those mails did not pass the AOL anti-spam settings. Many AOL
subscribers found themselves being unsubbed from various rootsweb lists
because their server had changed settings and rootsweb mails somehow fell
into whatever category of reject mails that AOL hd set.

Anyway, yes, maybe I am getting a better service from my server than people
outside Ireland, our servers deal with a smaller number of people for the
most part, and while servers all over the world are doing their best to save
themselves and their clients from the damage that can be done by the many
types of virus on the go - maybe the Irish ones, being smaller, are just
that little bit more personable - still able to relate to the person at the
end of the phone, still able to keep their clients updated so long as they
go to the Servers Home page.

Ireland is amongst the leading IT nations in the world, there are many
others who are as up to date as we are, and I imagine that what my server
offers is also on offer by other servers, it's just a case of finding
someone nice enough to talk to you and maybe talk you through the process if
you are not too familiar with computers.

#3. The web site I mentioned has specieal advantages - personally, I don't
consider keying in my server password in order to access my mail through
another web site to be giving away any personal information. Here in
Ireland, fer of us comunicate through email - therefore most of my mails
relate to genealogy or are from friends I've met internationally.

Those emails are a lot less important, regardless of how close any person
is, than my hard drive on my computer. Now, that represents a lot of work -
years of data.....and to me, the special advantage is that by accessing my
mail through that web site I mentoined and being able to recognise and
delete all the rubbish - without that rubbish ever acrually coming in to my
computer and therefore infecting my computer with some hidden code, is very
important.

The other advantage is that I can delete the particularly big files that
have not been deleted by my servers spam programme before I download them
and go through the time it takes to download all of these.

Overall - my connect time is shorter - saving me money.

You are very lucky to have no spam at all. Those of us with web sites are
plagued..........and then those of us with web sites who do post to email
lists a lot are plagued even more. Our addresses are saved in other
people's address books, and other people are not necessarily as careful as
us.............therefore our addresses get passed on by virueses that infect
other people's computers - we get emails with virus attachments from
ourselves.

Until the last few days, I was receiving at least 15-20 emails with
attachments purported to come from Microsoft - the latest in internet
viruses, with so many different subject lines that we can't keep up with
them - all about 150kb's in size. They're just the viruses - then I had to
deal with Viagra etc mails - how to increase my size - and I don't mean
height - how to get a mortgage - how to decrease my debt - all kinds of
rubbish

Under normal circumstances - that is until the last few months, I received
about 150 mails a day..........

I was off the net from Monday morning until Thursday evening this week, and
there were over 900 mails in my inbox

So, you are very lucky not to receive spam - and if you have none, then the
URL I offered is of no use to you.

and yes, we do need discussions on this topic not just once in a while, but
regularly - new people coms on the net and join groups daily - they should
be kept up to date on the problems that can be encountered.

Some may consider this off topic, but for those of us whose addresses end up
in the address books of others, then it is very relevant
