Myrtle could be just a plain old English name. I've known a number of women
in the state of Maine whose first name was Myrtle, and almost any first name
will be found as a last name for some folks. It is also the popular name for
an aromatic evergreen shrub with white flowers (genus - Myrtus). There also
was a series "Dear Myrtle" that was popular in the "good old days".
