Subject: The value of money?

Hello all.

I noticed on Ellis Island manifests that they noted whether or not my
relatives landed with $50 in their pockets, and noted on the sheets
if it was less than that. Does anyone know, in terms of today's
money values, what $50 would have been then? Also, does anyone know
what a two-week transit ticket from Queenstown/Cobh to New York City
would have cost?

Second request: is there a fast way to get naturalization records
from the government? Some sources say write to INS, others to NARA,
others to the Justice Department. My grandfather lived, and
presumably filed, in the District of Columbia between 1912 and 1918.
His WWI draft card said he was a "declarant" for citizenship at the
time of enlistment.

Thank you in advance. You all have been great help in the past.
