Maureen, My understanding is that businesses were not allowed to sponsor workers. That is, a ticket could not be offered if you come to work at this place. Irene

Subject: [GALWAY] Sponsorship?

Hello all and thank you in advance for the information.

I've been frustrated over the past two years to not find information
on my grandfather on the Ellis Island databases. I learned in a
class yesterday that those immigrants who were sponsored, along with
US citizens and visitors only, could disembark directly at the wharf
and bypass Ellis Island altogether.

My grandfather was sponsored by a plumbing company, so that would
account for him. But he paid for the passage of his brother and
sisters who are registered at Ellis Island.

My question is: What constituted sponsorship? If he paid for his
siblings, did he not sponsor them?
