Tim, There is a book "Down By the Claddagh". I believe it is only sold from Kenny's in Ireland but I was able to get it through interlibrary loan in the USA. I don't know where you are but you probably have some such system thru your local library. Irene

Subject: [GALWAY] another book

Hey listers,

For those that are researching in the Conemmara section of Galway...another book is listed on ebay..."My Connemara Childhood"

(if anyone finds ANY books about the Claddagh section of Galway I'd be beholding....)

A Family History book written by Ellen M. Blake who lived in the Connemara section of County Galway in the 1870s. A narrative of what life was like at the time in this remote section of Ireland.
The book begins:
"Connemara is that part of County Galway which lies along the western seabord. It is separated from the rest of Galway and the great plains of the midlands by two range of mountains called the Twelve Bens and the Maam Turks. It is a wild country of bogs and heath stretching for miles between the rocky mountain and thickly studded with large and small loughs. When I was young, the view was broken only by a solitary cottage or sometimes, a small group of them....Tully village was about a mile over the hill by a rough track that could hardly be called a road. The village consisted of several public houses and few small shops, a school, and the Post Office which was the center of county life. The Post Office was kept by WIlliam Glynn, an old man with a long beard...."
A hard to find and RARE look into the daily lives of the inhabitants of the Connemara.
Being sold as USED.

OUGHTERARD
St Michael

"In 1827, Dr Joseph Kirwan, D.D. was appointed to Oughterard as "Junior Vicar of the Galway Wardenship". He was given by Thomas Martyn, M.P., son of Colonel Martin (Humanity Dick), "an acre of land in the town of Oughterard", for a parish church site. However in 1839, after the church was built, Mr. O'Flaherty of Lemonfield claimed in law that the church site granted by Thomas Martin was in reality part of the O'Flaherty Estate. Daniel O'Connel, at the request of his daughter, Mrs French of Oughterard, came to Galway and settled the matter in two days. The outcome was that the lease of Dec 26 1840 made between Thomas Henry O'Flaherty, Thomas B. Martyn, Rev. Joseph Kirwan, Rev. George Plunkett Browne, Daniel O'Connell and Anthony O'Flaherty..."

Not my area of Galway...thought someone might need it
