Subject: [KER] Ballymullen Barracks/Part 2/Staff Barracks Boherbee
Date: Tue, 5 Feb 2002 17:03:36 -0800

The Staff Barracks later known as Saint Patrick Buildings in Boherbee were
built about this time (1868)

These were the married quarters for the permanent staff of the Barracks,
such as depot instructions. Other British Regiments that served in
Ballymullen included the Cheshire Regiment (I822) 2nd Battalion Welsh
Regiment (1874) the Lincoinshire Regiment, The Royal Inniskillings, the 2nd
Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, and Royal Marines. A former Depot
Commander, Major P. Charrier R.M.F. who served in Ballymullen Barracks in
1912/13, was killed in action when in command of the 2nd Battalion R.M.F.
during, the retreat from Mons in 1914. The scene of this action is marked by
a Celtic Cross n the village of Etreux. During the Great War, Ballymullen
became a rest barracks for various battalions who came to rest and regroup.
Many extra huts were built at this time to accommodate the extra numbers.

*********************************

On a personal note, the Staff Barracks in Boherbee, played a big part in my
childhood memories. I grew up a stone's throw from it, and all my friends
lived there.
It was an imposing building, with three floors. It became the home for many
Tralee families, divided like a block of apartments. It was torn down in the
1970s,
and now the site of a housing scheme for the elderly with a drop in day care
centre on the grounds (named Saint Patrick's Bungalows)
My grandfather was at the Battle of Mons, and survived, to be given the Mons
Star. (with the 6th Inniskelling Dragoons)

Kerry Kate
