Edel,
the problem with overgrown graveyards in some areas of Kerry, seems to
happen when the families of those who are buried there, no longer live in
the area.
I have seen one suggestion that people send donations to the local parish to
help for the upkeep of the cemetery.
I know many people in Kerry work on a voluntary basis to tidy up and care
for old grave plots.
Gods Acre at Ballybeggan is one example, (old pauper graveyard) going back
to famine times.
and Rath in Tralee has a volunteer committee to oversee the upkeep working
along with Kerry County Council.
A special alter was erected there in recent years for the saying of Mass.
Just passing it along as a matter of interest.(about sending donations) to
the local parish.
I also read recently, (think it was the on line version of Kerry's Eye)
that more people are choosing cremation because they feel their final
resting place will not be taken care of by future generations.
It seems to vary from place to place as to the condition of the graveyard. I
have seen wonderful changes in Rath, over the years. Great improvements.
For those interested in knowing the townlands of Ballynacourty parish in
Corcaguiny there are as follows.
13 townlands.
Annascaul- Annagap-, Ardrinane,- Ballinclare,- Ballintermon,-
Ballynacourty, -Brackloon,- Coolnagoppogue,- Coumduff,- Farrancarriga,-
Gortacurraun,- Gurteen, Gurteen North.
