Subject: [KILKENNY] Lawless Palmer Connection

Greetings Fellow Researchers,

I am writing because I am at a "brick wall" in my research and I think the
breakthrough is waiting in Kilkenny. I joined this list in hopes that the
common research area may yield some insight into potential areas to go for
sources.

One of my immigrant ancestors from Ireland was named John Palmer Lawless
and he arrived c1852 in New York. He was a tailor and we have always
suspected that his well-documented middle name was Palmer after his
mother's surname. This was the first logical guess and seems likely in a
country where middle-names were less common (during that time frame).

A likely cousin of my family found information on an Edmond Lawless of St.
Patricks, Kilkenny, Co. Kilkenny. That Edmond Lawless wasa tailor and
married a woman named Margaret Palmer. Further to add to the case is that
of the nine or so children Edmond Lawless and Margaret Palmer had, one was
named John Lawless and was born and baptized in 1825, which is quite
similar to the suspected birth date of my immigrant ancestor.

Between the cousin and my family we have paid Rothe House for a good deal
of research, however, I think it may be time to try an alternative source.

Are there city directories for Kilkenny? I would like to track the
Lawless siblings to determine whether or not that particular John
(b. 1824 to Edmond Lawless and Margaret Palmer) stayed in Kilkenny or not
(which would reduce the likelihood that he is my ancestor).

What other sources could I visit to learn information about him. From
Tithe records, I have learned that the Palmers and Lawless' lived quite
close to each other an dlived in addresses such as Warrington, Black
Quarry and a sibling was on Walkin Street.

Two of the children were suspected to have gone to Australia and I am not
sure about the rest.

I have actually been to Kilkenny, but wasn't aware of this potential
connection at the time (despite having visited St. Patricks). Is there
research that can be conducted there? Also, is anybody aware of a decent
researcher in Kilkenny who could possibly aid my family in this research?

Would it seem likely that a son would take the mother's maiden name?

Looking forward to any and all feedback.

Sincerely,

EK
