Greetings to all those on the new LAOIS list.
We're hoping to find more on our 3g-grandfather, FRANCIS HUNTER,
born in 1783, Queens Co., Ireland (now Laois / Leix), emigrated to
Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada.
In the list of "Associated Names" below are those who were either
on the Canadian land-grant petition with FRANCIS HUNTER, or were
frequent sponsors or witnesses in the Diocese records of Saint John,
New Brunswick.
FRANCIS HUNTER
Birthdate: 1783
Birthplace: Queens Co., Ireland (Laois) [parish unknown]
Spouse: CATHERINE PENDERGAST, b.1783, prob.Queens Co., IRL.
(Francis & Catherine were married in Ireland)
Associated
names: Wallace, Foley, Doolin, Fitzpatrick.
Religion: Roman Catholic.
Occupation: The HUNTERs were cabinet-makers, carpenters,
furniture finishers, upholsterers.
Military: An old family letter says that FRANCIS HUNTER had
military service. We haven't found the records yet.
Emigration: Francis, Catherine and 5 children arrived in Canada
in 1818. (Source: New Brunswick land-grant petition)
He was age 35.
Children: 7, including Thomas, Catherine & Margaret (the latter
two were born in New Brunswick, Canada. Two of the
HUNTER sons (forenames unknown) went to the U.S.:
one settled in Baltimore, the other "went west."

forenames: In the two next generations, many named HENRY HUNTER
(nicknamed Harry); also many named JOHN, FRANCIS and
WILLIAM.

Land-Grant: Requesting a grant of land from the Crown, FRANCIS HUNTER
submitted a petition dated 1823, with PATRICK WALLACE of
Queens Co., IRL, and WILLIAM FOLEY of Co. Carlow, for
acreage on Ten-Mile Creek, Saint John Co., New Brunswick.
The 1823 petition gives this information:
- FRANCIS HUNTER: born in Queens Co.IRL, from which
he and his family emigrated in 1818. Married;
they had 6 children at the time of the petition.
- PATRICK WALLACE: also born in Queens Co.IRL, from which
he emigrated in Oct. 1822. Married; no children.
- WILLIAM FOLEY: born in Co. Carlow, IRL; emig. to Canada
in 1817. Married; one daughter at time of petition.

N.B. res.: Had farm & timber acreage on Drury Cove on the Kennebecasis
River, in the Portland area of Saint John, New Brunswick,
off Marsh Road. The area is sometimes called Mt. Pleasant
or Pleasant Valley. The inlet is labeled "Hunter's Cove"
on some maps.

eration: Son THOMAS HUNTER, born in Queens Co.IRL ca.1812, married
Catherine Gorman in Saint John, N.B.
Daughter CATHERINE HUNTER, b.1819/20, Saint John, N.B.,
married Marmaduke Ritchie in Saint John (his 2nd wife).
