Hi there,
I have added an Encumbered Estate to the County Laois (IGP) website. The estate
belonged to Peter GALE Esq. and encompassed Ashfield, Gale and Raheen Div.
Encumbered estates were those which were sold due to debt. The tenants are
listed. It was common to have a lease of "lives" which meant as long as the
named people were alive the lease was in effect. It could be difficult to know
when people had died so sometimes well known figures were named since their
deaths were well known. The eldest children of the Queen were being named in
many of these leases. Not of genealogical use but that was why it was done.
I have two more estate maps to add but it's late so I will do them tomorrow.
