Hi,
I'd like to post the details of a family that emigrated from Co. Leitrim to Lanarkshire, Scotland in the hope that someone recognizes them or is also researching them.
Michael HOPPER was born c. 1837 somewhere in County Leitrim. Catherine McCUE was born c. 1841 somewhere in County Leitrim. Her parents may have been Stephen McCUE or McHUGH and Ann McFARLANE.
Michael HOPPER & Catherine McCUE or McHUGH emigrated to Scotland (possibly separately) in the 1840s or 1850s.
Michael HOPPER married Catherine McCUE or McHUGH in 1857 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. It seems like the couple were living in Strathaven/Avondale, Lanarkshire, at the time [the nearest Catholic Church would have been in Hamilton, Lanarkshire]. It looks like the family moved to Edinburgh between 1864-1867 and then to North Berwick between 1874-1881.
1881 census for Haddington, North Berwick, Scotland shows:-
- Michael HOPPER, 43 (so b. c. 1837), b. Co. Leitrim, Ireland, occ: agricultural labourer
- Catherine HOPPER, 40 (so b. c. 1841), b. Co. Leitrim, Ireland, wife
- Ann HOPPER, 22, (so b. c. 1859) b. Strathaven/Avondale, Lanarkshire, Scotland, daughter, occ: outdoor worker
- Francis HOPPER, 19 (so b. c. 1862), b. Strathaven/Avondale, Lanarkshire, Scotland, son
- James HOPPER, ,17, (so b. c. 1864) b. Strathaven/Avondale, Lanarkshire, Scotland, son, occ: agricultural labourer
The IGI also shows other children, who may have been living with relatives, or may have died as they do not appear on the census:-
- Catherine HOPPER, b. 1867, Edinburgh
- Margaret HOPPER, b. 1871, Edinburgh
- Mary HOPPER, b. 1874, Edinburgh
Does anyone recognize this family?
Thanks.
Michelle
