As a new subscriber to this List I, firstly, wish to thank Jane Lyons,
Admin. of this List, for her kind invitation for a "Roll Call" to the List.
My Leix/Laois/Queens County interest concerns my paternal Great Grandfather,
Andrew MAHER, who was a "native" of Blandsfort, Queens County, Ireland; born
circa 1796. This information comes from the Saint John Cemeteries Records at
the New Brunswick Provincial Archives in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.
These records indicate that Andrew MAHER died Nov. 16, 1871, Aged 75 yrs.,
and is intered in St. Mary's Cemetery, Saint John, N. B.
From various inquiries I have made I understand that there is a Blandsfort
Cross Roads in Laois just north east of the town of Abbeyleix. The
suggestion given was that it might be possible to catch revelant Sacramental
Records from the Parish Records in Abbeyleix. I have also been advised that
earlier Sacramental Records were maintained in the Cathoilc Church in
Ballinakill, starting in 1794. I believe that Ballinakill is located just
south of Abbeyleix.
I believe, but am not 100% certain, that I have located my Andrew MAHER
sailing on the Brig "Sea Horse" from the Port of Dublin on April 17, 1833
and arriving at the Port of Saint John, New Brunswick on June 12, 1833.
These records indicate his former residence as Queens County, Ireland. Also
on this Passenger List is a Mary MAHER, also form Queens County, Ireland.
My question to the List is two-fold. Are these Sacramental Records available
for research, either from the original records or via microfilm, and, if so,
is there anyone avaiable to carry out said research.
I am, of course, prepared to compensate a researcher for any and all
reasonable costs involved and would be quite happy to try and reciprocate
any research requests for my area of the Province.
Any response to the above would be most appreciated.
