BRIDGET was apparently a derogatory name for a servant during the worst days
for the Irish in America. Most commonly, Bridgets who wanted to change
their name went back to the Latin (?) equivalent, DELIA. I had found a
great source on the meaning and origin of Irish names, as well as Irish
naming patterns, all, I believe, within someone's personal home page. I
guess I didn't bookmark it, because now I can't find it. Perhaps someone out
there is familiar with the site and can post it to this mailing list I'm
sorry I can't give you a more definitive answer.
