cu'ig Deireadh Fo'mhair ( 5 October, Tuesday) or in Cornish, pymp Hedra,
De
Merth

In 1263 the Norwegians who had invaded Scotland four days previously,
gave
up on their effort. They retreated to Norway for good, leaving ships and

wounded on the beach. King Hakon, their leader, died on the way home.
Thus
ended four centuries of the Norse menace. This victory for the Scots had
been
predicted by Thomas the Rhymer, Scotland's first major poet (Sir Thomas
Learmonth of Ercildoune, in Lauderdale. Thomas was renowned for his
prophecies. Alexander was going to be married in Kelso Abbey, but Thomas
had
a dream of the roof falling in. So he moved it to another place. The
roof did
fall in, but not for another 600 years.

In 1895 Yann Bizien, Breton language writer, was born.
