This is the feast day of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales.

In 1651 the Cromwellian forces invaded the Isle of Mann.

In 1920 the Mayor of Cork, Terence MacSwinney, died in an English prison

while on a hunger strike.

In 1960 Harry George Ferguson, Irish inventor, aircraft designer and
aviation
pioneer, died.
