Thanks for the extracts from Tenison Grove's 1766
Religious Census. Here are the 'snippets' I mentioned
on Switzer.
" February, 1818. Statement of evidence of Stephen Childerhouse, Kilbeg, who
swore ..." ... that on the night of Friday, February 6th, 1818 he was having
supper with his family. Between 7-8pm a stranger
called to the house and enquired for Mrs. Fitzgerald
as he had a message for her. When Mrs. Fitzgerald
was called the stranger asked the distance to Ballingarry. He stated he had
come from Limerick.
He declined the offer of refreshments and when he was about to leave a party
of twelve men rushed into the house armed with pitch forks and wattles and
attacked George Switzer and Darby Jordan who were seated at the table. He
gave a graphic account of his own beating and how he eventually escaped into
another room and his in a cupboard. He heard the assailants drag George
Switzer out into the yard. They returned looking for him but the maid swore
he had escaped in the confusion. They stole a pistol
belonging to George Switzer and then left. They heard George Switzer
groaning in the yard. He was brought into the house bleeding profusely. He
died at 5.00pm
on the 7th. February, 1818 {SOC ref. 1963/9 Nat. Arch.}"
"Sept. 20, 1829 John Switzer was married to Mary Hodgins" (sic) at
Ballingarry, C of I."
" Record of Grand Jury, 1845. John Switzer, and that he on 20th. Sept., 10th
late King (William iv, 1829 did marry one Mary Hodgens (sic) and he had for
his wife, and that whilst he was so married, he on 12th. Nov.
8th. Queen (Vict. 1845) at Ballycahane, Co. Limerick feloniously and
unlawfully did marry one Honora McMahon, and to her was married. The said
Mary, his former wife, being alive against the peace, etc. No details of
trial."
Someone on the might have an interest in these
items.
Regards
Arly.
