Griffiths Valuation - per Tony McCarthy (no relation) of Irish Roots
magazine "when the information had been gathered up by the valuers, it
was set down in tabular form, standard for the whole country, and
published. Two-hundred (200) volumes cover the country, county by
county. Each townland appears in Alphabetical order within its civil
parish, the civil parishes are arranged alphabetically within their
baronies"
Unfortunately, those of us photocopying/transcribing Griffiths for
Limerick find that some PARISHES are missing from the LDS films.
Paul Keroack advises that "The films numbers you mentioned (LDS film
Nos, 101755 844986 and 844987) seem to be the total done for
Limerick, according to a listing published in the "Septs", Journal of
the Irish Genealogical Society International (MN), v. 21, no. 3 (July
2000). I noted some time back in a posting that these films leave out
some large chunks of Limerick, especially Connello Upper (16 parishes,
by my count)."
This is exactly what we are finding.
Paul goes on to say "A fiche set published in Ireland, available at
NEHGS and O'Neill Library of Boston College, both in Boston, and CT
State Library in Hartford, to mention places that I know of, does seem
to have these missing parts."
"Irish Microforms, Ltd., the firm that created the fiche, used
manuscript volumes to substitute for some missing printed ones. These
handwritten ones, including some from Limerick, are perfectly legible
and were the originals the printers set type by. I don't have the
article in front of me to quote, but I read it recently. The NGS
Quarterly is available in a number of larger public libraries with
genealogical sections. Perhaps someone should ask on a web list for
info regarding the availability of Griffiths fiche sets, or ANY
complete version! Perhaps there are more than we are presently aware
of."
Can anyone enlighten us on this please. Per the Los Angeles Family
History Centre it says that the entire set of Griffith's Valuation is
available on the following Film nos.:
Northern Ireland 0258749 - 0258758
Rep. of Ireland 0844975 - 0844996
However, I have found Parishes missing and from many of the Baronies.
I should very much like to hear from people who have worked with LDS
films of Griffith's Valuation. You DON'T have to volunteer to do
anything - just advise me of what FILMS you used to find your Limerick
PARISH and particular TOWNLAND.
Can anyone advise of Libraries that have the complete fiche set?
I photocopied most of Clanwilliam Barony when I was in Ireland last at
Limerick City Library but need to know other sources for Griffith's
data to enable the FEW dedicated transcribers/imputers get it locally.
"Locally" being anywhere from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the
US!
Your help on this much appreciated.
Thanks,
Kathryn McCarthy
