Subject: [LIMERICK] First Motor Cars registered in Co. Limerick (1904)
Date: Sun, 2 Sep 2001 16:28:16 EDT
While searching the internet for family-related information, I came across a
relatively recent article by Mangaire Sugach in the "Limerick Leader" (May
12, 2001 issue) on the subject of traffic in the county. The article also
provided information on the first motor cars registered in the county,
mentioning the following names:
..."number IU 1. It was owned by James Denis Lyons, of Croom House, Croom;
was a 10 h.p. Dequingard, and was of a dark green colour, lined with paler
green. The registration fee was £1. During 1904, the following other vehicles
were registered in county Limerick.
IU 3, Ariel motor cycle, owned by Norman Goodbody, Westbourne, Limerick.
IU4, Motor cycle owned by Alexander Edmund Bannatyne, Glenevan, Croom.
IU5, Ormonde motorcyle, owned by Arthur Edwin Switzer, Ballingarry.
IU6, Voiturette-Rochet motor car, coloured red, lined black, owned by William
Vincent Massey, Rathgonan, Ardagh.
IU7, 91/2 h.p. Napier motor car, coloured blue; owned by John Gubbins, Bruree
House, Bruree.
IU8, 10 h.p. Panhard Lavassor motor car; coloured green, owned by Thomas
Herbert Phelps, Willow Bank, Limerick.
IU9, Ariel motorcycle, owned by Fr. William Fenton, C.C., Ardagh.
IU 10, Voiturette two-seater motor car; coloured green, owned by John James
Egleston, Melville House, Knocklong."
