Hi Padraig and list.

Greetings from Sydney, Australia.

I recently obtained some excellent information on ancestors from St
Munchin's records.

St Munchin's was closed in the 1960's but the records are now held at St
Mary's cathederal.

Searches of these records are done by the Tourism Development Officer, Mrs
Noreen Ellerker, who does them for the Dean of St Mary's in her own time and
asks a fee of 20 pounds, payable to her. I used an agent and am not sure
whether the fee is Irish punts or English pounds.

Her address is St Mary's Cathederal, Bridge Street, Limerick.

You can also e-mail to the Dean at .

Regards

Tony Smith

Killeely or Meelick Parish, as it was known under both
names in 1837, was located partly within the North
Liberties of the city of Limerick, but lying chiefly in the
Barony of Bunratty, [Co.Clare]. This is what Samuel Lewis
wrote about it in 1837:

"It extends [ from the Clare side] nearly to the old
Thomond bridge [over the Shannon river] at Limerick, and
includes the distillery of Stein, Browne, & Co. ...There
are stations of the constabulary at Cratloe, Meelick, [both
in Co. Clare], and Thomond Gate [city]. Cratloe House is
the residence of Stafford O Brien, the demesne and wood of
Cratloe, which are chiefly in this parish, extend into the
adjoining parish of Kilfentinan ... The church [Church of
Ireland], a small plain structure is picturesquely situated
at Meelick ; it was built by the grandmother of the present
Marquess of Conyngham, and was subsequently made parochial
... In the R.C. divisions this parish is partly in the
district of Meelick, and partly in that of Thomond Gate, or
St. Lelia. "

I can readily understand (having grown up in that general
area, and travelled the roads to Meelick and Cratloe Woods
many times in my youth) that if Mary Ann Dulahy resided in
the extreme Co. Clare side of the parish, and for whatever
reason wanted to be married at church of St. Munchin's
[C.of I.] -just across the river from Thomond Bridge - that
the parish Minister of Killeely would give permission for
her to be married in another parish; hence the intent of
the phrase "at the request of the Minister of Killeely
parish". In other words, she was cleared to be married
without impediment at St. Munchin's church.

As for the sacramental records, I have no idea, but I would
suggest to you to write to the archivist at St. Mary's
Cathedral [C of I], Bridge Street, Limerick - this is the
Cathedral Church of the diocese, and where what remain of
the parish records of old non existent and non-used parish
churches are kept.

Without knowing her pre-marriage family name, it is nigh
on impossible to search for anything in wills and deeds
about an inherited estate in Limerick (and, as you probably
know, the problem with using the word 'Limerick' is that it
could also include the county of same name).

No personal replies - reply to LIST only, please. Thank
you.

blast, still clearing the snow and ice.)
