On maintaining history ...
Its purpose is mixed religious butmaterially secular...
Andre Malraux of the De Gaulle Presidency faced a quandary as cultural
minister in France
... constittuioanl separion of church and state as in most modern
nations ... confronted the dilemma of crumbling church buildings etc...
Malraux advised de Gaulle that the buildings were part of the cultural
and historical architectcural treasury of France .. and state funds were
made availble to assist their preservation and restoration. ..That and
tax incentives to preserve with non-profit private philanthropy or even
a positive commercial restoration incentive.
Malraux's advice was applied and on the 'macho' Irish strerotype side
... yes .. they respected him well ...even if they though he was a
little 'douce'.
