Pat, to clear up possible confusion, are you referring to
both 'Limerick Ancestry' and 'Limerick Archives' which are
two separate, though linked, organisations within the same
building known as The Granary in Limerick, both funded by
the city and county councils .
The 'Limerick Archives' (separate office and a spin-off
from 'Limerick Regional Archives, founded in 1986) is
operated by Dr. Chris O'Mahony, and is a distinctly
separate operation to the 'Limerick Ancestry' office,
though I feel sure that 'Limerick Ancestry' use the
expertise and data- bases of Limerick Archives in family
searches.
>From the Limerick City Library web pages
(http://www.limerickcity.ie/ and scrolling on the side-bar
to 'Recreation, Amenities & Culture', one will read:-
"LIMERICK ARCHIVES is jointly funded by Limerick City
Council and Limerick County Council and is located on the
second floor of the Granary Building in Michael Street. It
is the repository for local government archives in Limerick
City and County, while also collecting archives of private
origin relating to Limerick. The service has evolved from
Limerick Regional Archives founded in 1986. The archives
service provides record management advice to both Limerick
City Council and Limerick County Council.
"COLLECTIONS:
"Limerick Archives has one of the largest local government
archive collections covering local authority archives,
administrative records of older bodies including Board of
Guardian records, Rural District Council records and
private papers."
"The Archive service cannot carry out genealogical or other
research on behalf of the public. (For genealogical
research contact Limerick Ancestry, Michael Street,
Limerick, tel. 353 061 407530, www.limerickancestry.com) or
Limerick Ancestry - Genealogical Research page"
"LIMERICK ANCESTRY- Genealogical Research
"The service began about eighteen years ago as part of the
Midwest Archives (later renamed Limerick Regional Archives)
and since then it has offered a genealogical research
service to the public. In 1999, when it became part of
Limerick City Council and Limerick County Council, it was
split into two separate but linked functions: Limerick
Archives and Limerick Ancestry.?
"Limerick Ancestry provides a professional family history
research service for Limerick City and County. With a
database covering all extant church records, property
surveys and census records, plus access to the civil
records of births, marriages and deaths, it is possible to
find anyone on record in Limerick prior to 1902 and
sometimes up to 1911"
So, are you inferring that both organisations are been
threatened by cut-backs in funding; or worst, complete
closure? I note that you posted your information also on
Social Genealogy Ireland - can we clear this confusion?
