The name MacShane bears no relation to the surname Mac or
O' Shinnagh or its variants.

Mac Shane means 'Son of Sean'. Often known as Johnson. In
Ulster and Co.Louth the MacShanes are a branch of the
O'Neills. The Westmeath family of Shane were a branch of
the O'Farrells. In Co.Kerry the name MacShane was assumed
by the Fitzmaurices. So wrote Edward MacLysaght in
"Surnames of Ireland"
