MacLysaght in his "The Surnames of Ireland" [ISBN
0-7165-2366-3] wrote that O'Hare ( Ó hIr, Ó hÉir ) - I hope
these accented letters show up properly on your computer,
if not, read : O hIr, O hEir as long sounding O's and E )
is an English name , BUT when properly O'Hare [he doesn't
elaborate on 'properly' - I assume he refers to the above
bracketed Gaelic forms], it is an Oriel Sept.
Oriel's [Orghialla] ancient territory included parts of
Cos. Armagh, and Monaghan, and parts of south Co.Down, Co.
Louth and Co.Fermanagh).
Is Mise Phádraig = I am Patrick
[ An t'Sean-Gabhar ;-) ] = [The Old Goat]

> Padraig, could you help again, please, this time with
information on the name O'Hare. One of my local O'Hare
friends is starting his family tree and has heard that
O'Hare is not, in fact, of Irish origin but originated on
mainland Europe, possibly Germany. Do you have any
information on this name?

of your "Is Mise Phadraig (An t'Sean-Gabhar)", please.
