Thanks, Padraig.
Taverns? Okay. That is what I originally thought. Then, I started finding
the word Publican and I thought that was a tavern. At least one of the Public
Houses was registered by a woman, so I thought, maybe, a boarding house /
tenement establishment.
Now, of course, I am completed flummoxed. The daughter of a parish clerk was
living on a quay that housed at least four taverns? From the map of Limerick
that I have, there seems to quite a few quays along Dock Road. I'm thinking
each quay could have only been a few blocks long. Yet, her witnesses were
Mafey Hewson and James Hewson. According to a credible list member, the Hewson's
were the "in" crowd in those days. Nothing makes sense any more.
