I feel like I must weigh in on this discussion. I have known men named
Murtaugh, but that was a surname, not a given name. I have always
associated that name with a surname.
On the other hand, Martin is quite common as either a given name or a
surname. Here in the U.S., the common nickname for Martin, whether for the
given name or surname, is Marty.
As to whether or not Murtaugh or Murtah is a common given name in Ireland, I
haven't a clue, and I will leave that up to those who live there to
determine. But in my limited research of Irish records, I do not recall
ever seeing Murtah or variants used as a given name.
To me, the nickname of Murt (or Mert, or Mertie) would be used for a female
named Myrtle!!
