Dear Mr. Ó’Gealagain,
In response to the email which you forwarded to me, Limerick Genealogy is a new organisation operating independently and without public funding.
The former service, Limerick Ancestry was funded by Limerick City and County Councils until February 2004 when the local authorities closed the service due to budget deficits. Approximately eighty per cent of the costs of running Limerick Ancestry were met by the local authorities which meant that the fees were subsidised and could be kept so low.
Since the closure of Limerick Ancestry, two former members of staff including myself made several attempts to revive the service. A number of bodies were approached with the aim of obtaining funding to run the service but no support could be obtained. As former researchers with the service we were acutely aware of how dissapointing it was for Limerick to be one of the only counties in Ireland to be without a research service particularly when so many were enquiring about the service. Limerick Genealogy was therefore set up independently to provide the service to those who were requesting it. The fees charged by Limerick Genealogy are necessary to meet the costs of running the service and to keep it in operation. Because there is no other funding available, it operates on a small scale. Every attempt has been made to keep the cost of running the service as low as is possible and therefore keep the cost to the client realistic. There will be no profit made from the service.
The Assessment and Initial Report costs €165. This Assessment analyses in detail what information is available on the family in question through the various nineteenth and early twentieth century sources available; church and civil records, land valuation and census records and many miscellaneous genealogical sources. It outlines in detail what particular records are available on the family and allows the client to decide whether they wish to pursue the research further. In addition the Initial Report provides the details on the immediate generation of the family which the client is looking for i.e. the details of marriage and issue from church and/or civil records. All additional information is quoted for accordingly. The Assessment and Initial Report takes between a day and a day and a half to complete. A report of this type would not be taken on if it was felt that it would not be sucessful. This is why a certain amount of information is required to begin any research. It is important to Limerick Genealogy that the client receives value for money and that the time and effort of Limerick Genealogy and the money of the client is put to good use. Nevertheless there are cases where searches prove negative, the information provided by the client must be considered on an individual basis.
With regard to the email referring to the database, yes Limerick Genealogy has access to the same database employed by Limerick Ancestry. This database means that more efficient and conclusive searches can be carried out because all searches are countywide. This is a great advantage as many clients do not know where in Limerick their ancestor came from. Nevertheless the research is still time consuming as each search for a birth, marriage, death or census return is carried out separately. It is necessary for the researcher to make the connection between the records and produce a picture of the family at a particuar period in time.
It is dissapointing to hear that there is a lack of support for people who are genuinely trying to get this service up and running again and trying to make the information available to those who are seeking it. For a period of over two years, the database and records were in storage. The database of over three million records was compiled over twenty years and the time and effort that involved, was going to waste as no other body could suggest a realistic way to reopen the service.
I hope that I have answered your queries.
Sincerely,
Catriona Crowe

The sub-joined email from a U.S. List member. At Euro 165 - I don't think
you'll encourage too many response for an ' initial search and report - but
Good luck to you, anyway.
