This is interesting Chris, but if one were to deduct the many unmarried females, children, both female and male, it would not add up to a boatload, but it is indeed possible that many of the older males found work on the canal that was under construction since a year previously.

There is some evidence of boatloads of Irishmen coming to America
specifically for the purpose of canal labor. The Brig Lydia of Haddam
arrived from Cork to New Haven, Connecticut on June 30, 1826. New Haven was
not a frequent port of entry at that time but the date of arrival coincides
with the construction of the Farmington Canal (New Haven, CT to Northampton,
MA). It seems that these individuals were brought to New Haven specifially
for the purpose of working on the canal and some corporatate, or large
contractor sponsorship of the trip seems likely. See the passenger list at

I never heard of such a plan either. I made no reference as to who was
bringing the workers over, and am puzzled as to why anyone would think
it to be a government scheme, either USA or the UK, but then there may
be others who know more about it than I do. This is in the time frame of
1825-1835, before the notorious Irish famine years. Most likely it was
the private contractors who were hired to build the canals that hired
agents to find the workers in Ireland.
