CLERGY
Dennis Cardinal Dougherty, born in Girardville, PA was of Ballycastle,
Co. Mayo parents. After a long distinguished career in the Philippines
and in the United States, he died. Cardinal Archbishop of Philadelphia
in 1951 at the age of 86.

The name of Archbishop John McHale is a byword in the Mayo Men's Assoc.
of Philadelphia. Born in the shadow of Mt. Nephin in 1791 and ordained
in Dublin in 1814, he became Theology Lecturer at Maynooth and was
considered the most learned theologian of the period. Appointed
Archbishop of Taum in 1834, he was responsible for exceptional
alterations in the National School system. The entrance of the
Christian Brothers into the Irish educational area thwarted Dublin
Castle in its program of Anglicanism. The "Soupers" who participated in
this British work of destruction "got short shrift" in Mayo. Space does
not permit a history in detail of other distinguished clergymen whose
names are starred in the Mayo firmament, but we cannot omit mentioned
Father Patrick Peyton who instituted the Family Rosary Crusade; he was
born in Attymass, Ballina. Nor can we omit Bishop Michael O'Doherty, of
Charlestown, Bishop of Manila, who was so cruelly treated by the
Japanese in WWII. Lest we forget Mayo's most recent legend Monsignor
James Horan.

SPORTS
Gene Tunney, former heavyweight boxing champion of the world, claims
Mayo descent, as does Johnny Kilbane, former featherweight champion, who
held the world championship for many years. The birthplace of Gentleman
Jim Corbett is a point in dispute, but we know he was raised in the
vicinity of Castlebar.
Martin Sheridan of Bohola, Co. Mayo, winner of five Olympic Records in
1906. John B. Kelly, Jr. whose people hailed from Westport.

ENTERTAINMENT
In the entertainment world, Mayo is represented at home by Delia Murphy
of Foxford. Dennis Day, born Eugene McNulty, is of Charlestown
parentage. his mother was a native of Bare. To the devotees of
television, comment of the talents of this actor-singing star is
unnecessary. Mary McGonigle, singing star from Bellmullit. Princess
Grace - former Grace Kelly, whose people came from Mayo.
