Irish Roots magazine did a short feature on "The Pope"s Irish Army"
I have this short article but did not mark the issue.
..........."the 1860 Italian campaign of Ireland's Battalion of St. Patrick
was mercifully brief. Poorly armed and barely trained, its 1000 men were no
match for the professional soldiers of Giuseppi Garibaldi and the King of
Sardinia. The Irish were fortunate to be able to surrender at Spoleto and
Castlefidardo with only a few score casualties".
If you wanted more information on this, I imagine that the Museum in Dublin,
The National Library in Dublen might have some information or a good history
on the Papal States might prove valuable..
