I would appreciate help or comments from anyone with knowledge of the Cloonan families in Co Offaly. In particular, the Ferbane area where I believe my Grandfather, Lawrence Cloonan, a native of Co Offaly, may have came from.
My Grandfathers parents in Co Offaly were James Cloonan who married Margaret Howard .
The only three children we know of; Sara, Lawrence and Mary, came to Australia. Sara on the"Sir Edward Parry" in 1848. and Mary and Lawrence on the "Conway" via Liverpool in 1858.
Because their are births, ( Roman Catholic) registered, in both Co Offaly and Co Tipperary we have been told they may have lived in an area where the church and state borders do not coincide.
Many descendants of Cloonan families that came to Australia last century can trace their ancestory back to the parents their ancestors left in Co Offaly, but without some local knowledge of the family connections on Co Offaly, we cannot find out what Cloonan families they are related to in either Ireland, or Australia.
Most of the Cloonan families in Australia I have researched, came from the Ferbane area.
