Hi Janet,

I am guessing you are aware of this Rootsweb message board, but if not
here is a Pennsylvania Quaker board which might be of help.

Good luck,

Maryann

This is a long-standing, probably hopeless ancestress mystery on my
father's side.

I want to fill in all the blanks (including parents, grandparents, etc.)
for her.

What I know about her so far:
1. As Elizabeth Fayle, she transferred in 1753 (docs. dated 28 Nov 1754)
from Edenderry Monthly Meeting, possibly at that time in County Offaly,
Ireland (?), to Exeter Monthly Meeting, Berks Co., PA. (I have her
transfer letter, signed by a number of Edenderry members, including
several with surname Fayle; if these signers might help to confirm her
lineage. I'll see whether I can transcribe them.)
2. She met and married TOWNSEND MATTHEWS, SR. in Exeter, PA, in 1761. He
was temporarily ex-communicated from Quaker Church for bearing arms in
French and Indian War, so on Feb. 26. 1761 she was precautioned by
Exeter MM not to marry a non-Quaker I have that transcript from the
minutes, as well as the one
dated March 26, 1761, in which ELIZABETH FAYLE NOW ("ALIAS") MATTHEWS
was dropped from Exeter MM's membership.
3. Hinshaw in Virginia notes them both as being fully restored to their
former Quakerism and notes scattered throughout show that they evidently
continued as practicing Quakers the rest of their lives.

What we know about her husband, whose family was able to take his line
clear back to England and, happily for me, made it available at
FamilySearch:
1. Townsend Matthews, Sr. - born 1737 Berks, PA to Robert Matthews and
Mary Coles 2. Married Elizabeth Fayle - Exeter, PA - 1760 (Exeter MM
notes seem to indicate 1761; so far can't find the marriage record) 3.
Before he died in 1808 in Greenbriar, West VA (where are they buried
????) they had the following children:
(1) Emele (Amelia?) Matthews - b. ca 1762, Berks, PA -d. Rockingham,
VA 1790 - Married Ebenezer Henton [this is my line, faily well
documented from this point on]
(2) Ezekial Matthews - b. ca 1765, Berks, PA - marr. Jane McSparvin
(3) Mary Matthews - b. ca 1768, Berks, PA
(4) Robert Matthews - b. ca 1771, probably Berks, PA - marr. Nancy
(Mathews) Green - ?????
(5) Joseph Matthews - b. ca 1773, Berks, PA
(6) Townsend M. Matthews - b. ca 1774, Berks, PA - marr. 6 Nov 1843,
Raccoon Tp, Gallia Co,, OH -
Nancy Williams
(7) John Matthews - b. ca 1775, Berks, PA
(8) Elizabeth Matthews - b. ca 1777, Berks, PA

I hope I copied all this data correctly from the FamilySearch site.
Elizabeth Fayle - born where? when? parents? why did she come to
America? when and where did she die?
where is she buried?

Janet
